Immigrants often would risk anything for a new chance at life. Many immigrants begin life in America by living in a city. Some of them started farms in the west. Almost all of them came to the United States needing to learn a new language: English. The immigrant children are their best hope for the future. The immigrants have to work long hours at difficult jobs. They will have their children educated in ways that are unfamiliar to them.
Some immigrants were attracted to America by false wishes of easy riches and wealth. Some of them were forced to leave their own countries because of hunger and poverty, religion and political issues. It was a very difficult decision to travel to America away from the land they grew up in.
"Farewell to old Ireland, the land of my childhood which now and forever I am going to leave ... I'm bound to cross o'er that wide swelling ocean in search of fame, fortune and sweet liberty." --From the song, "The Emmigrants' Final Farewell"
